The Fabricator September Edition A common concern for fabricators is finding the right type of press brake when it comes to small parts bending jobs. In a recent article that appeared in The Fabricator, MC Machinery's sales manager Casey Schlachter discusses three things to consider when selecting the right press brake for small-parts bending.

Fabricators usually work with a broad range of small parts creating the challenge of deciding which of the three types of press brakes (conventional hydraulic, electric, and hybrid) is best fit for more productivity, accuracy and safety. Schlachter broke down the pros and cons to help fabricators choose the right machine for their shop needs.

To achieve maximum productivity Schlachter said that electric press brakes with an AC motor drive react quicker than valves and gravity by powering down the ram faster than a freefall. When accuracy is the focal point, Schlachter explained that most modern hydraulic press brakes are the best choice for general job shop work.

With any press brake operation, the operator must be absolutely safe especially during small-parts bending while working close to the pinch point.  The most popular systems are laser guards that release one or more discrete laser beams under the punch tip. These lasers move up and down with the ram and if anything disrupts the beams, the ram immediately comes to a halt.
