At Reliable EDM, a Houston-based wire EDM job shop, business is conducted to follow the golden rule—do to others as you want them to do to you.

“It is our mission to serve our customers with high quality, reliable service and competitive pricing,” states company president, Carl Sommer. He and sons Steve and Phil Sommer have implemented this strategy since the company was started in 1986, making Reliable EDM the largest wire EDM job shop in the Southwest.

Carl’s extensive industry experience dates back to 1949. He has worked as a precision machinist, tool and die maker, foreman, tool designer and operation manager. With a life-long objective to educate others, he and son Steve Sommer, M.E., co-authored the Complete EDM Handbook, recognized as one of the industry’s most informative and insightful EDM handbooks for designers, engineers, machinists, and others in the metal machining fields. The Complete EDM Handbook can be downloaded at

With a mechanical engineering background and a thorough knowledge of computer programming, Steve Sommer serves as VP of Reliable EDM. Brother, Phil Sommer, applies his business and training skills as VP of Operations for Reliable EDM.

Operating 24 hours/day, six days/week, Reliable EDM supports customers nationwide. With more than 40 Mitsubishi wire EDM machines, both wire and sinker EDM, and CNC small hole EDM capabilities, the company has the capacity to meet production needs for multiple industries, including energy, aerospace, oil and defense.

According to Reliable EDM, wire EDM has several benefits over other machining processes: efficient production, fast turnaround, reliable repeatability, stress-free and burr-free cutting, exotic material capabilities, tight tolerances, excellent finishes, and independent axis machining. Why does Reliable EDM chose Mitsubishi? In 1991, Carl took a trial cut to Mitsubishi and another competitor. The results proved Mitsubishi to be much faster.

“Because of Mitsubishi’s performance and service,” explains Carl, “we made the decision to become a Mitsubishi EDM company. We have found through the years that Mitsubishi has provided excellent support. This is critical for us, we are totally dependent on Mitsubishi for parts and service.”

Mitsubishi EDM wire technology gives Reliable EDM the flexibility to specialize in cutting tall and large parts, up to 40 inches tall and weighing up to 10,000 pounds. The company’s FA30V can cut parts up to 24 inches fully-submerged. As newer technology with greater capabilities comes into the market, Reliable EDM will continue to expand capacity and take productivity to greater heights.

“Seventy-five years on this earth and being in business 20 years has taught me the tremendous value of a free enterprise,” explains Carl. “Either you stay aggressive and keep up with technology, or you’ll be passed up.”
