Increase Productivity, Improve Quality and Lower Overhead with EDM Automation

Automating EDM can increase productivity and lower overhead while improving quality. MC Machinery’s National Wire EDM Product Manager Mike Bystrek explains the advantages of EDM automation, how automation tools like artificial intelligence work, and how manufacturers can implement automation in a new article in Aerospace Manufacturing & Design. “It’s important that we achieve a greater acceptance of EDM and the smart tools and controls that can be incorporated,” Bystrek says in the article. “It’s the optimal way to produce a cheaper part more quickly.” Read the entire article here.

Five-Axis Hard Milling Improves Electrode Accuracy

Problem: Moldmaker couldn’t machine graphite electrodes fast enough to meet needs of new sinker EDMs, so he was sending work to outside companies to relieve production bottleneck. Solution: Purchased one, and then another, OPS Ingersoll high-speed, five-axis hard-milling centers. Results: Moldmaker could now mill much faster and more accurately that it brought all graphite electrode production back in-house and increased mold production rates. Read the entire article here. Article originally appeared in the August 2020 issue of Moldmaking Technology Magazine.

Give It Up for an All-Around Value-Maker, Efficiency-Builder: Press Brakes

What can’t they do? An MC Machinery spokesman demonstrates how press brakes and press brake tools are so multi-functional and adaptable, manufacturers can creatively use them in applications beyond sheet metal and stamping dies.   THE CUTTING EDGE BY DAVID BRAY Adding value to the production process, while also saving time and money is a goal for any manufacturer. With the right tools, press brakes handle jobs that are typically spread out among multiple machines or would require buying additional machines. This adds value while saving time and money. Uncommon Uses Press brakes can also perform jobs that are typically assigned to specialized machines. For example, press brakes can form rods and tubes and add press-fit hardware to sheet metal ...

Use Your Machinists to Make Dies

Full article in Modern Machine Shop, July 2020 edition.  Written by Emily Probst, Senior Editor. “Becoming a tool and die maker is like driving a car — you don’t start out as a racecar driver. It takes a while to get there,” says Neil Dohe. “You have to get a feel for what you’re doing, and that only comes with years of experience.” In making this analogy, Mr. Dohe, who is the operations and sales manager at Dies Plus, a division of Otto Engineering, does not mean to imply a hierarchy between machinists and tool and die makers. Instead, his point is that a tool and die maker usually has a very specific skillset — one that includes the experience necessary to ...

Pandemic Reveals Opportunities for Manufacturing Innovation

More than 60 percent of manufacturing employees surveyed by MC Machinery said the pandemic has revealed opportunities for innovation, most notably collaborative manufacturing and automation. More than 350 people participated in the online survey between April 24 and May 1. The respondents represented all types of manufacturers, including job shops, automotive, food, mold & die, aerospace, medical, and energy. Eighty-six percent work for or own manufacturing companies with under 200 employees. Eighty-two percent of respondents were working on-site at essential businesses, and 30 percent were manufacturing COVID-19-related products, including personal protective equipment, ventilator parts, testing supplies, hand sanitizer, and hospital equipment. Sixty-two percent of respondents said the pandemic revealed manufacturing innovation opportunities. The biggest opportunities cited were collaborative manufacturing (29 ...

Canadian Metal Fabricator Uses New Mitsubishi Fiber Laser to Produce Sneeze Guards, Social Distancing Signs, and Medical

Customer Case Study: Laser   Mill Finish Industries, a metal fabricator in Brampton, Ontario, is using its new Mitsubishi SR-F fiber laser to produce sneeze guards, social distancing signs, and medical-grade stainless-steel tanks. Mill Finish Industries President JR Sehmbi said the company started manufacturing sneeze guards in March after a local hospital requested them. The company is currently making about 80 sneeze guards weekly for U.S. and Canadian retailers, restaurants, and medical offices. The Mitsubishi laser is used to make the guard’s steel legs. The social distancing signs, made from aluminum and stainless steel and cut using the fiber laser, have been so popular with grocery stores and medical offices that the 100 it is producing weekly barely meet demand. The company ...

COVID-19: Mursix Uses MC Machinery’s CO2 Laser and Wire EDM to Transform into Major PPE Manufacturer

In March, the Yorktown, Ind. component manufacturer Mursix was in the midst of a year-long business downturn due to a decline in production of automotive industry parts. Less than two months later, Mursix has transformed itself into a major manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE), making 500,000 disposable face shields a week for hospitals and nursing homes all over the U.S. and Mexico. The drastic change has taken hard work, sacrifice, creativity, and innovation. Mursix co-owner Susan Murray Carlock, a former ER nurse, was looking for ways to further diversify into the medical industry when the pandemic hit the U.S.  At that time, about 10 percent of the company’s business consisted of manufacturing components for the medical industry, including respiratory-assist devices, vital ...

ASTES4 Offers Better Part Picking and Sorting

The downside of faster production can become especially evident for companies that operate in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment.  The perceived gains from faster cutting speeds are quickly diminished when parts sit as ‘work-in-process’ immediately after cutting.  When lasers begin to outperform the offloading operation, the bottleneck shifts to parts organization – and shops must adapt accordingly.  Because of this, it’s crucial to think beyond the cut. An interesting way of evaluating the process is starting at the end.  Starting with the last process and working backward is a good way to identify inefficiencies and opportunities for cost reduction.  For instance, if you find that the parts are getting lost as they move from one stage of the production process, ...
