Remote Monitoring Reveals How to Boost Uptime on Laser Machines

East Iowa Machine Co. (EIMCo) in Farley, Iowa, is a full-service machine and fabrication shop. It is an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturing company, employing about 150 people on three shifts at its single 130,000 ft2 (12,077 m3) location, and converts raw metals into finished component parts and assemblies using a wide variety of CNC equipment and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. CEO, Rick Hoffman, recognized something wasn’t right with his manufacturing hours.  His Sunday reports consistently revealed about 280-320 earned hours a week on his four lasers instead of the 400+ hours he was expecting over EIMCO’s three weekly shifts. Read about how EIMCO implemented MC Machinery’s remote360 software to continuously run and monitor production, and how his operators learned that small ...

COVID-19: Incodema Uses MC Machinery’s CO2 Laser, Wire EDM and Press Brake to Make Innovative PPE for Healthcare Workers

Customer: Incodema Ithaca, N.Y.   Problem: Incodema, A precision cutting and forming sheet metal manufacturer specializing in prototypes, was approached by Ithaca's Cayuga Medical Center (CMC) in early April 2020 to produce face shields, a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) in short supply during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most fast-turnaround PPE is made with non-sanitizable materials like foam or low-quality plastic and can only be worn once. Incodema decided to make face shields that could be sanitized and reused.   Solution: Incodema's master toolmaker, Clint, developed a design using stainless steel for the face shield's headband and Mylar plastic for the shield’s headband and Mylar plastic for the shield itself—both of which are materials that can be sanitized and reused. The ...

MC Machinery featured in Fabricating & Metalworking magazine

The difference in skill between an experienced EDM operator and an inexperienced one can be wide. In fact, EDM work has traditionally been only for very skilled operators, but in today’s machine shops, people must learn to run many different machines, resulting in less specialized EDM operators. In a recent article featured in Fabricating & Metalworking, Mike Bystrek, national wire EDM product manager and application manager, and Pat Crownhart, national sinker EDM product manager for MC Machinery, discuss how EDM technology is tapping into everything from AI to remote control. In their article, “How EDM Technology is Adapting to the Reality of the Modern Workforce,” Mike and Pat provide multiple examples of how sinker and wire machine builders are helping to ...

Transitions – Macro Forces Drive Changes in Forming Departments and Press Brake Technology

Three macro forces drive significant change in the world of forming.  They don’t necessarily paint a rosy picture, but there is good news to come. According to a 2019 Deloitte report, 89 percent of manufacturing executives agreed that companies cannot find qualified applicants for their manufacturing-related positions.  Pair this with the high price of adding floor space to the idea of “throwing more labor at the problem’ is not a feasible option. New press brake technologies are addressing some of these challenges head-on.  Learn more from this article by FF Journal here.

The Promise of Next-Level Automation

Edge. Cloud. Digital Twin. AI. AR. VR. Cobots.  Once they were buzzwords.  Now, they are becoming technical realities in mid- to large-scale manufacturing plants in North America. Timelines for adoption will vary according to the industry sector, but a recent study indicated that 76 percent of manufacturers have a smart factory initiative in the works. When implemented correctly, these initiatives will transform our plants – making the production of everything from prepared foods to jetliners more efficient, consistent, and more interconnected.  Automation enables a level of accuracy and productivity beyond human capabilities – even in environments that would be considered unsafe for humans. “In the mold and die industry, for example, we are seeing flexible manufacturing systems that take the ...
